Automation has been gaining more attention since the Industrial Revolution, with companies seeking to increase ROI and efficiency in the industry. Experts predict that companies implementing automation out of necessity and to reduce the time it takes to complete tasks like transporting items across the warehouse in 2024. This comes as labor shortages, increased competition from new-entrant e-commerce players, and consumer demands increase. Andy Johnston, senior director of innovation for Geodis, said the company is focusing on lower-lift technology implementation and use in 2025. While the focus initially was on systems that could impact individual shipments or people, Johnston plans to focus on commercial use cases this year. He also expects drone-based solutions with AI built into the background to increase inventory efficiency.
