The Bangladesh Labor Foundation (BLF), BRAC University and Solidaridad Network Asia have found that automation has caused a 31 percent decline in the total ready-made garment (RMG) sector workforce in Bangladesh. The majority of these workers were helpers who perform tasks requiring lower skill levels in factories. The BLF warned that while automation has boosted economic growth and productivity in the sector, it has also created significant challenges for RMG workers, particularly women, older employees, less literate individuals, and those lacking skills or confidence. The hardest-hit subsectors of the industry have been sweater factories, which saw a 37 percent decline per production line and woven factories which saw 27 percent drop in their respective workforces. The Bangladesh Labor foundation highlighted the need to address these issues through its economic transition program.
