Despite opposition from the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) in the US, port automation continues to move globally. New Zealands Port of Tauranga is preparing to convert its Sulphur Point container terminal from a straddle carrier yard system to an Automated Stacking Crane operation. In Australia, the Federal Government announced an A$70m Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) investment in Flinders Port Holdings (FPH), which owns and operates the Flinders Adelaide Container Terminal in South Australia, to reduce emissions and reduce costs. FPH is also considering transitioning from hybrid straddle carriers to an electric Automated RTG crane.
