The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) have been engaged in a dispute over the use of semi-automated technology at their ports. This comes after nearly 50,000 American longshoremen went on strike in October, marking the first strike of the union since 1977. The union and USMX reached a temporary agreement that suspends the strike until January 2025, but if they fail to resolve a new contract, the strike is likely to resume. The USMX wants the new contract to include the same language on automation as the current contract, which was signed in 2018. The ILA, meanwhile, wants absolute airtight language that there will be no automation or semiautomation.
