The rise of automation and artificial intelligence (AI) in Malaysia has led to nearly 300,000 job losses for 293,639 workers since 2020, according to data from the Ministry of Human Resources (Kesuma). The manufacturing sector has been the hardest hit, accounting for 75,615 lay-offs up until September 2024. Other affected sectors include wholesale and retail trade, professional and scientific services, and information and communication technology. The government has implemented skills development programmes aimed at improving employability in technology-driven sectors. The revised minimum wage will not affect skilled and semi-skilled workers, but will affect lower-level workers.
