MGI, a leading European company in the genomics sector, has diversified its automation technologies to address wider research needs beyond genomics. The companys core business is focused on sequencing platforms, reagents and consumables used in sample preparation and library construction. Giancarlo Basile, Head of the Automation Sales Department of MGI Europe & Africa, explains that MGI realised that its flexible platforms could serve a wider array of research needs. The shift towards custom automation took significant time and resources to establish internal capabilities for custom automation and develop bespoke solutions while maintaining quality, scalability and cost-efficiency. To build full workflow solutions, MGI established a network of technology partners across Europe and America, including microplate reader manufacturers, imaging, incubation and environmental control. Basile emphasised that custom lab automation, particularly in pharma and biotech, has historically been costly and complex.
